The Gateway Arch, located in Gateway Arch National Park (formerly Jefferson National Expansion Memorial), is a national historic site. The Gateway Arch reflects St. Louis' role in the Westward Expansion of the United States during the nineteenth century. The park is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson's role in opening the West, to the pioneers who helped shape its history, and to Dred Scott who sued for his freedom in the nearby Old Courthouse.

The park itself offers 97 acres of engaging activities. In addition to the Gateway Arch and the tram ride to the top, the park is home to The Museum at the Gateway Arch (FREE), Monument to the Dream documentary movie, Riverboat excursions, the Old Courthouse (site of the landmark Dred Scott decision, also FREE), three gift shops and a riverfront cafe.
