Wells Street, Division to Menomonee

The heart of Chicago's Old Town neighborhood is the vibrant commercial district along Wells Street. As you walk up Wells Street -- from Division Street to Menomonee Street -- you'll find a unique blend of restaurants, small shops, boutiques, pubs and theaters. Wells Street is home to the famed Second City sketch comedy and improv troop (1616 N. Wells). Second City, founded in 1959, helped launch the careers of a virtual "who's who" of comedians and actors including Alan Arkin, Ed Asner, Peter Boyle, John and Jim Belushi, Bill Murray, Shelly Long, Steve Carell and Tina Fey to name a very few.

No matter the reason -- a pre- or post-show dinner, a day of exploration or just a fun night out -- there are plenty of superb bars and restaurants in the area. Choices range from good pub fare and pizza to European, Italian, American, Asian and Mexican cuisines.

For Italian, there are a couple of great options. Topo Gigio Ristorante (1516 N. Wells) is a long-standing local favorite, offering outstanding classic Italian dishes and a comfortable warm-weather patio. Gussie's Handmade Italian (227 W. North Ave.) is located directly across the street from The Second City and features fresh ingredients and handmade pastas -- perfect for families or date night.

If you're looking for an outstanding Irish pub, Declan's Irish Pub is located at 1240 N. Wells. This is a great neighborhood bar with a large warm-weather patio. Old Town Pub (1339 N. Wells St.) is another great spot with handcrafted pizza, ribs and a large beer selection. They also have a warm-weather patio. If you're looking for fast-casual, Dog House Grill (1534 N. Wells) is home to great Chicago-style hot dogs, sausage and Italian beef sandwiches.

Given its diverse selection of dining and nightlife, Wells Street is a fun and entertaining area to explore, day or night.
